Whistle-blowing
Whistle-blowing occurs when a worker discovers that something is wrong and alerts his employer or a relevant authority to that wrongdoing.
A worker who makes a qualifying disclosure to a specified category of persons is protected from suffering a detriment.
What is a qualifying disclosure?
A qualifying disclosure is one or more of the following kinds:
- criminal offences
- failure to comply with a legal obligation
- miscarriages of justice
- threats to an individuals health and safety
- damage to the environment; or
- deliberate attempts to cover up any of the above
